Here is my tip for Tuesday. Add hummus to your tuna or salmon as a nice healthy alternative to mayonnaise. I rarely ever use mayonnaise. I stick with mustard most of the time, well except when I am at In and Out Burger, then I pile on the thousand island dressing. haha But mustard doesn’t taste good on tuna.

The hummus I buy is from Costco. It is Sabra hummus with roasted pine nuts. The ingredients are chick peas(garbanzo beans), water, tahini(sesame), soybean and/or canola oil, garlic, salt, pine nuts and a few other things to season it and keep it fresh. I hope someday to make this myself and use olive oil instead of soybean oil. But the point is it makes a nice spread and you get the benefit of eating one of the worlds healthiest foods. Chickpeas can help lower your cholesterol level, lower your risk of a heart attack and even help stabilize your blood sugar. This makes a nice dip for crackers too. I took 4 T of hummus, 1/2 cup of canned salmon, a few tomatoes and a few pieces of chopped up onion and mixed it all together. Add some whole wheat crackers and Voila! A nice healthy snack.

    I may have to try this one.

    I make dips out of beans all the time. I have wanted to make hummus, but I could never find the sesame paste (tahini) in my local stores.

    I make the dips using chickpeas, lemon juice and whatever seasoning I feel like throwing in at the time. I have also used powdered ranch dip seasoning to make a healthier dip my kids would actually eat with carrots.

    I have used other white beans instead of chickpeas (like navy beans) – they all work well.

    Hi Julie. What kind of bean dips do you make? I make a spicy bean dip sometimes for the kids and my dh. He will eat beans a little here and there but he really LOVES it when it is hidden like as in hummus or spicy bean dip or chile. lol

    I don’t make the spicy bean dip too often cause my weakness is tortilla chips. I have been wanting to make hummus too but I don’t even know where to look for tahini either! haha Does it taste okay without it?

    My Aunt made the spinach dip off the Knorr package over Christmas and it was soooo good. I know it has sour cream in it though so those cals can add up really quickly.

    I have a fabulous fat-free hummus recipe – give it a try – takes only minutes.

    Fat Free Hummus

    * 3 c. cooked chickpeas (I use one large tin – rinsed)
    * 3 cl. garlic or more
    * 6 tbsp. lemon juice
    * 1/2 tsp. salt
    * 1/8 tsp. cayene
    * 3 tsp. cumin

    Blend it all together in food processor or blender. Add water/bean liquid as needed to make right consistency. Like a dip. Adjust seasonings to taste. If you want you can add some tahini or sesame oil.

    Enjoy!
